You may need to invest in a heavy weight paper, however. Overall, the quality is easily good enough for any home project-like school work or party invitations-or even for printing business graphics at home that you intend to give to clients who you need to impress with your professionalism. That's a step up, however, from the many printers that lose those lines altogether. Like many printers, the C4680 had a problem with thin lines, printing some of the thinnest lines in our test only faintly. But for anything short of that, the C4680 should be able to handle any text you need to print. As with any inkjet, the characters lack the crisp edges you'd want for something like a resume. Unfortunately, one of the most commonly used fonts didn't qualify as well formed at any size below 20 points because of a character spacing issue, although even it was highly readable at 4 points. Even highly stylized fonts with thick strokes passed both tests at 10 points. More than half of the fonts in our text suite passed both the highly readable and well formed thresholds at 5 points, with some passing at 4 points. Text and graphics were both higher quality than most inkjet AIOs can manage, and photo quality was well within the range where most ink jet AIOs fall. The C4680's output quality was another pleasant surprise. In comparison, the NX515 was much slower for photos, at 2:05 and 4:41.- Next: Output Quality Probably more important for most home users, the C4680 also printed photos at a reasonably fast clip, averaging 1:16 for a 4-by-6 and 3:03 for an 8-by-10. The Lexmark X4650's total, for example, was 31:56. That's a lot slower than, for example, the more expensive (and unusually fast) Editors' Choice Epson Stylus NX515, at 8:32, but it's not unusual for printers in this price range to be only half this speed-or double the time. I timed it on our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), at a total of 16 minutes 54 seconds. One of the more pleasant surprises I ran into with the C4680 was its speed. In addition, the C4680 comes with printer and scanner drivers only for XP 圆4 SP1 and higher, and you can download printer and scanner drivers for Linux from HP's Linux imaging and printing support page. (HP says OS X version 10.6 and Windows 7 will both provide C4680 drivers as part of the operating system). According to HP, it also comes with drivers and a full set of software for Vista 圆4, XP SP1 or higher, and Mac OS X v10.4 and 10.5. Finally, you can run the automated setup program from disc, and install the USB cable when the program tells you to.įor my tests, I installed the printer on a Windows Vista system. Then snap in the black and tri-color cartridges, load paper, and run the semi-automatic alignment routine, which prints out a page, and then asks you to place the page on the flatbed so the printer can scan it and align the print head. Set the 6.7- by 17.4- by 16.6-inch printer in place, remove the packing materials, plug in the power cord, and turn it on. Setting up the C4680 is reasonably standard. This combination of features, along with the lack of any office-centric features-there's no networking, no fax capability, and no automatic document feeder-pegs the C4680 as being aimed strictly at home use, rather than, say, a home office or even a shared printer for home and office, although it's output quality for text and graphics is good enough so it could serve in a home office as well, for extremely light-duty use.
